Mulheron, who boasts an impressive 8-1 record, is the fourth ranked heavyweight in the country after an impressive stoppage over Polish monster Tomasz Czerwinski at Made4TheCage 19.
However, he is set to face his toughest test to date in the form of BAMMA Heavyweight Champion Mark Godbeer, the United Kingdom’s third ranked heavyweight, who already has experience at the elite level.
This does not worry Mulheron who gave us an exclusive interview: “The step up doesn’t bother me, like I say it’s been a long time coming. I faced a lad from down south called Stavros Economou in what was my fourth or fifth fight and he’d only been beaten by the likes of Phil De Fries and Damian Grabowski.
So to face someone like that, who was 15-2 at the time it made me believe that I belong at the top level.”
The fight is set for Bellator’s London event at the O2 arena on Saturday July 16 and will join the card alongside former British veteran Paul Daley, up and coming superstar Michael Page, notorious heavyweight Kimbo Slice and reality TV star Alex Reid.
Dale Percival, co-founder of Made4TheCage Fight Management who negotiated the deal for Mulheron is glad that the star is finally getting his long overdue shot at the big time: ‘James was due to fight in Made4TheCage on June 25th but when opportunities like this come then you grab them with both hands.
This fight was meant to happen before on my show but now will be on main card at Bellator London!’
Mulheron made sure to add his thanks to Made4TheCage too saying that after months of negotiation he’s happy to be able to announce the fight: “I feel great, just excited, really really excited.
“I want to say thank you to [Steven Scott] and Dale [Percival] for sorting it out. It’s been a long time coming, I’ve known for a couple of months so it’s great to finally get the fight sorted.”
If Mulheron overcomes this test and gets his predicted victory over Godbeer, the South Shields star has said he’ll fight anyone, amidst rumours of a possible Cheick Kongo bout: “I’ll fight anyone. Cheick Kongo or anyone, anyone in the world I’d love to fight whoever wants to fight. If he’s the one who wants the fight I’d love for that to happen.”
This is another huge leap in the right direction for North-East Mixed Martial Arts, which Mulheron is fast becoming a poster boy of, in what has been a historic year for the ever-growing sport.
With the recent announcement of the Great Annual Savings North-East MMA awards, a huge Made4TheCage card in June and this fight destined to be one of the most anticipated UK heavyweight clashes of all-time, the region’s fight fans have an action packed couple of months to look forward to.
